Liverpool’s Renewed Liberalism: Britain’s Third Party in Post-war Merseyside Politics

This article disseminates the initial findings of a project examining political change and party politics in post-war Liverpool. Based on scoping study funded by HSLC Research Grant, it explores exceptionalism revival Liberal support Liverpool following 1945, Liverpool, before outlining evidence gleaned from survey extant records regional institutional repositories. Finally, advances an conclusion project, suggesting alternative interpretation building scholarship associated with so-called ‘new history’. encourages more pluralist understanding Merseyside history, avoiding assumptions pre-1945 Conservative bastion or Labour city.
